The base has pits, either from the maker, or from rust at one time. The trivet left the factory with a crack in one spot. There’s just no way that trivet could have been hurt from any kind of use, because nothing around it is even cracked! But they were just making kids’ toys, and they really didn’t care if they were perfect or not! This little iron has a 2 1/4″ base front to back, iron only is 1 1/2″ high, and 1 3/8″ at the widest. It is shown in Politzers’ first book as fig. 27A. The trivet came with it, and will stay with it. This little iron was probably made in the 1920’s from the feel of the iron. Remember to look for the mold mark on the swans’ chest, to see if it is old or just a trashy reproduction. Questions, email me. ******** NOW ON SALE, NEW LOWER PRICE! ************ Beautiful is right, this iron is pretty large and fits the trivet perfectly! The outstanding trivet is shown in Politzers’ book 1 page 237 Fig 443. Do you see the very large “M”? It has 4 raised points to hold the iron even tighter. You have to look closely to see the mold mark on this old iron. It was smooooooothed off by the factory, but it is still there. Size of the iron is 1 7/8″ wide at the back, nearly 2″ tall, and 2 13/16″ front to back. They were purchased together and will stay together. If you don’t care if the swan iron is old or new, then get a new one and save a lot of money. But if you want just old, then watch for that mold mark on the chest of the swan. The Politzers show this iron as Fig. 27 D, on page 20 in their first book. The Politzers’ call the mold mark as a “goiter”. There are 4 photos to show this pair up close and personal, but if you have questions, email me.
